Swimmers look to make a big splash
Broughton swimmers are already hard at work as the 2016-2017 season starts up.
“The season is going pretty good, it’s kind of tiring in the mornings but it’s fun. We stretch and then we get in the pool at 5:40 a.m and then swim for an hour and then get out, take a shower, and go to school,” Freshman John Michael Curtis said.
Their first meet was on November 15th, gaining a 2nd place rank among competitors Enloe, Holly Springs, and Heritage High School.
For the women’s 50 yard freestyle, Genna Brewer led the team to first rank in the A final with 9 points and a time of 25.39 seconds. In the 500 yard freestyle, Stella Kempf led the team with 9 points and a time of 5 minutes, 28.53 seconds. In the 200 yard individual medley, Maria Baric led the team in the A final with 9 points and a time of 1 minute, 1.80 seconds.
Broughton’s women’s team finished the events with a total of 142 points, coming second only to Enloe High School, who finished with 193 points.
In the A-final for the men’s team, David Washburn led the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 50.95 seconds, and the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 55.37 seconds. Smith Moran led the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 2.74 seconds and Jack Messenger led the 100 yard freestyle at 52.49 seconds.
Broughton’s men’s team finished the events with a total of 164 points, coming second only to Enloe High School, who finished with 175 points.
“This season, I’m looking forward to an improvement in times, just having a good time and swimming faster. Perfect practice makes for perfect swims,” Coach Richard Dubois said.
